    March 1 2023

    Dear friends,

I'm so excited to be painting on all these new paintings, I don't seem to have time to update all my pages as much as I'd like to!!

Traveling soon, back in early April. The new medium and large figures seem to be working so far, so I am cautiously optimistic :)

The Valentine's prints were a big hit and are sold out, THANK YOU!, but as we all learned last time, we always keep spares, and after everything is shipped and received, the spares show up on the Sebastian Foster website for about ten minutes. If you want to hear about when that is going to happen, please sign my email list (thank you for signing up!).

Hoping to see you in April, I would love to host a few events to revive the San Francisco Spring Open Studios in-person tradition.

    February 2023

    Dear friends,

Again, much gratitude for all the wonderful support this past year, thank you so much for the visits, chats, emails, and purchases, and thank you for appreciating my paintings, books, and prints! I hope they give you good energy and make you very happy, as this is my favorite and most important reason to paint.

I will now be traveling for a little while, working in my studio in Germany, back mid-February. New medium and large figures are underway, and I am very excited. New prints coming in May, with a special edition of one particularly popular print end of February/early March. More news soon, via my email list (thank you for signing up!) and Instagram (thank you for following along!)

With much love from the San Francisco Studio,
all my best for 2023- and soon Happy Year of the Rabbit!

    December 2022

    Dear friends,
I am SO EXCITED about the limited edition prints published last week on SebastianFoster.com!
Take a look! They are excellent quality prints of some of my favorite paintings and ship worldwide.

The San Francisco studio will still be closed for a little while as I am working on things. I may have some open studio days before Christmas, depending on how that's going :)
Not sure there will be time for online purchases, but fingers are still crossed.

In the meantime, you can always email me. Take a look HERE to see available pieces and let me know if there is something you like.

    All best as always!

    Hi everyone!
October is here, ArtSpan San Francisco's Open Studios event kicks off this week, and I will be participating on the very first weekend which is coming right up!

    Studio Open:
    October 22 & 23, noon-5pm at the Revere Studio

    Address:
1044 Revere Avenue, Studio C76, San Francisco
    For DIRECTIONS click HERE.

Come visit if you can! The BIG FIGURES are finally ready to go, I matted some new works on paper, painted all my walls, learned that it is en vogue again to put cloud arrangements above the sofa, had some limited edition posters printed (5 and 10), and there are four new postcards you could collect and send to your friends.

If you don't feel like going out, you can also purchase paintings via email. Take a look at my website HERE, to see the new BIG FIGURES and AIRFIELDS, and some other available pieces. HERE's a short price list.

Please note that the new SMALL FIGURES are not ready for purchase yet, they are still being finished and drying, and I will send a separate email sometime later this month where you can order online.

Hoping you will find a painting you like! Perhaps I'll see you soon!
    All best as always!

    July 2017
    Hello Summer!

My studio walls are empty, my inventory is low, and I've dropped off most paintings at the SF MOMA artists gallery at Fort Mason.

There might be a pop up show this summer, then Open Studios in fall, but other than that, my calendar is completely clear.
This is really exciting, as it means I have a lot of room and a lot of time to paint, which is the best possible start into a long and productive painting summer!!

Here's what I'm doing: I'm working on more Small Figures and Standing Figures and Large Figures and all kinds of other figures and I can't seem to stop.
I also have some large landscapes and cityscapes on the walls to be slowly finished by fall.

More info on the SF MOMA artists gallery here, please contact them for any purchases on larger pieces. Also, for the first time ever I have posted all currently available work here, with more information on how to purchase.

    April 2017

Hello everyone, I'm sorry I missed Open Studios!

Here's what I've been up to:
I'm preparing for my April show, opening 4/22 at ARC gallery, curated by Matthew Vossen Frederick: METROPOLIS, with Lucky Kelly Rapp, Ken Sloan and Matthew Frederick. It is a show about iconic parts of the cities we love. I happen to love the part with the little boxes, as you can see in the image above/to your left.

Also, you should know that I've dropped off paintings at the SF MOMA artist gallery at Fort Mason, for their Art Benefit Sale. For the first time in ten years some of my work will be on sale between 10 and 50% off, to benefit the artists gallery. You can find more information here. Until April 13.

I'm back from LA, we had a terrific time at the StartUp ArtFair! So many new connections, thank you LA, for your support and for all the very nice comments! I'll be back!

The best news this week is that my work will be part of this year's ArtSpan SELECTIONS and on display at the ArtSpan Gala on Saturday, February 11, at Heron Arts in San Francisco.

This is a true San Francisco Gala, and if you can still get tickets it's highly recommended. Tickets start at $300 and proceeds support all ArtSpan programs. There will also be a free artist reception on Sunday.

I'll be in superb company- among this year's Selections artists are Catherine Mackey, Rodney Ewing, Carlo Abruzzese, Randy Beckelheimer and my Revere Studio colleagues Vince Koloski and Lea Feinstein.

I hope to see you there!

I also have some exiting shows coming up and will post more info soon.

    Portola.

Working on layers of paint, texture, mood, weather, color, light, grime. Using cardboard strips, brushes, squirt bottles, sponges, rollers, sticks. Paintings go from almost finished to barely started to overdone, paint is being washed off, piled on and moved around. I feel unsure, then convinced, then miserable, even more insecure, and finally, if all goes well, completely happy.

Still a long way to get there. Two more months.

City Sky #21 has gone to Hollywood

Hereafter is the new Clint Eastwood movie - and it has some of my paintings in it!

Within their selection of art from Hang Gallery, Warner Bros. had three or four of mine when they were filming in San Francisco earlier this year. I don't know if or when they show up in the actual movie and it was pure luck that City Sky #21 is so visible in the trailer. Love it!!

See stills from the trailer here.

    August 29 2010

from the press release that went out last week:

    Genius Loci
    Katja Leibenath
    September 1- 15th, 2010
    Artist Reception: September 2, 2010
    6 pm – 8 pm

Presented by HANG ART Gallery, Genius Loci is an exhibition by artist Katja Leibenath. This solo show marks Leibenath’s first at HANG ART. Referring to the endemic spirit of a location, this shows concept is inspired by the China Basin neighborhood of San Francisco. Her richly colored oil paintings are multi-layered, echoing the timelessness of this rarely explored area.

Leibenath begins her paintings on location, drafting and sketching scenes that inspire her. Once relocated to her studio, she draws upon her memory and spontaneous intuition to complete the works. Leibenath’s direct visual recollection coupled with her experiential memory shapes each painting. Her educational background in Architecture is evident within each composition, which is based on the theory of form and line. It is her familiarity with the area of origin that builds each canvas surface, and her imagination and reminiscence that complete the thoughtful intent. From the saturated and vivid under-paint to the finishing details and drips, each painting allows the audience to create experiences of their own.

Originally from Düsseldorf Germany, Leibenath has been painting in San Francisco since 2006. Her work has been showcased at numerous venues, including SomArts Gallery, Mina Dresden Gallery, The Lab, Liquid Spaces, Huff Harrington Gallery (Atlanta, GA), and Nahcotta West Gallery (Los Angeles).

HANG ART is located at 567 Sutter Street, between Mason and Powell Streets. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. For further information or high-resolution images, please call 415-434-4264.

Media Contact: DJ Harmon, 415.434.4264 djharmon@hangart.com.
